The small plover is a bird about 15 cm long, with a weight around 30-40 g. The bird normally lives next to water or on the coast and it also likes old quarry areas. The bird is migratory, arrives in Estonia in April and leaves in August.
Ornithologists visit the Kamariku quarry in Estonia regularly. The small plovers enjoy living and nesting in the quarry. In 2018, the quarry bottom was cleaned to create better nesting conditions. An agreement has been made with local ornithologists that no recultivation works should be done during nesting time between 1st May and 15th July.
During a bird-watching event in July 2022, organised by Nordkalk in collaboration with local ornithologists, a nest housing birds was discovered. Within this nest, two fledglings were located and subsequently marked with identification rings.
This case and much more about Nordkalk’s sustainability work in our new Sustainability Report 2022.
