Nordkalk launches sustainable product lines

The industry leader Nordkalk actively develops the environmental sustainability of its products and solutions to support not only its own climate goals but also those of its customers. Thanks to decisive investments in an energy-efficient and emission-free production process, the environmental impacts of the products have already been reduced, and the work continues. Nordkalk has defined precise environmental criteria for its products and is now launching the Next and Complete product lines according to those criteria.

Nordkalk Next products contain at least 33 per cent recycled materials, or at least 33 per cent fossil-free energy was used in their production. Some of Nordkalk’s existing products already comply with the Next series criteria, and now even more products are in line with these requirements. Even more stringent standards have been set for Nordkalk Complete products, as they are either made entirely from recycled materials or their production is fossil-free. The first products in the Complete series are already available.

Nordkalk has already succesfully manufactured Next and Complete products on an industrial scale, and the company has set the ambitious goal of achieving zero emissions by 2040 through a complete transition to fossil-free production. “Limestone products are used in just about everything, from the paper industry to construction and from agriculture to the metals and chemicals industries, to name a few. In the slaked lime and quicklime production process, limestone is heated to roughly 1,100 degrees, so the process demands high volumes of energy and generates CO2 emissions. Converting to fossil-free production will thus also have a positive impact on our customers’ emission calculations,” says Nordkalk’s Executive Vice President, QL, Mikael Furu.

Nordkalk’s roadmap to zero emissions includes investments in energy-efficient production, carbon capture and transitioning to fossil-free energy sources, which in practice means switching from coal to biofuels. Production side streams will also be utilised as circular economy products. In Sweden, the Ignaberga quarry already operates with zero emissions, and the Köping production plant is piloting carbon capture. The carbon capture module can capture up to 25% of the process emissions emitted from a standard kiln process at Nordkalk. “We want to offer our customers high-quality and sustainable products. Recognising the urgency of the climate challenge, we are actively investing in and advancing the development of emission-free limestone, without postponement” states Nordkalk’s Executive Vice President, Nordic Carbonates,.
