Vimpeli

In Vimpeli Nordkalk has two quarries and a grinding plant. As is usual in lime-rich areas, biodiversity is high in Vimpeli. Some rare flowers such as field gentian (Gentianella campestris) and broad-leaved helleborine (Epipactis helleborine) thrive in the quarry area. Nordkalk has cooperated with the environmental authorities to move and transplant some of the flowers to new locations.

• Industrial quarrying and grinding of limestone in Vimpeli dates back to 1949, but the first limestone deposit in the area was found already in the 1850’s.
