Nordkalk’s owner SigmaRoc has announced a co-operation agreement with Norwegian Aqualung Carbon Capture AS, a leading membrane carbon capture and separation technology provider. The aim of the partnership is to decarbonise Nordkalk’s kiln operations – which can happen even before than previously estimated. As a result of the agreement, SigmaRoc Group can now also commit to setting emission reduction targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative.
“This is very exciting news for Nordkalk and our customers. Partnering with Aqualung we can potentially decarbonise our kiln operations well ahead of not just our timeline but probably the entire industry. I am very proud of our technological team who have been working intensively to make this happen. This clearly shows the commitment of SigmaRoc to invest in Nordkalk’s future and to support our vision to become the leading player focused on sustainable solutions”, says Nordkalk’s CEO Paul Gustavsson.
First installation already in 2023
The first Carbon Capture facility is planned to be installed in one of Nordkalk’s lime kilns already during the first half of 2023. The installation, which will be Europe’s first industrial scale facility of its type, will be able to capture up to 25% of a typical kiln process emissions at Nordkalk. These are the emissions, which are generated from the raw material, i.e. limestone, when burned in high temperatures.
Once the first installation is operational, a full roll-out plan will be finalised to equip all Nordkalk’s operating kilns with the technology by 2030. In parallel, the parties will work on the entire carbon chain that includes the capture, sequestration and alternative uses or commercialisation of the captured CO2.
“The applied technology is deemed superior because of its simplicity and low energy intensity. Aqualung’s solution uses a patented membrane technology which is modular, compact and scalable and therefore well suited to our needs”, says Nordkalk’s Technology Director Mikael Wendel.
Committed to set Science Based emission reduction targets
SigmaRoc has announced its commitment to setting emission reduction targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and by achieving net-zero emissions before 2050.
“Nordkalk is proud to participate in SigmaRoc’s commitment. With Carbon Capture it will also be possible to tackle the emissions which have traditionally been the most difficult ones to eliminate. Besides Carbon Capture we will continue introducing more biobased fuels to our kilns and quarries, favor fossil-free energy in purchased electricity and logistics solutions as well as focus on energy and material efficiency and circular economy in our operations”, Nordkalk’s CEO Paul Gustavsson says.
In 2021 Nordkalk adjusted its long-term road map, eLIMEnate towards fossil-free operations according to SigmaRoc’s ambitious Road Map to Net Zero.
