Nordkalk and Juuan Dolomiittikalkki establish a joint venture

In order to strengthen its presence in the agricultural lime market of Eastern Finland, Nordkalk has acquired a majority shareholding of Juuan Dolomiittikalkki Oy. With the cooperation, the goal of both parties is to develop the liming market for soil improvement in Eastern Finland together with retailers, transport companies and spreading contractors – for the benefit of the local farmers.

“Our common goal is to develop the region’s supply chain and lime supply so that liming becomes more efficient, the growth conditions of the fields improve and thereby the productivity of farmland increases. The importance of liming has been emphasized over the past year as a result of the poor availability and high prices of fertilisers,” says Anssi Koikkalainen, responsible for Nordkalk’s Nordic operations.

Juuan Dolomiittikalkki is a traditional family business producing limestone-based products mainly for agricultural needs in Paltamo, Kainuu, and Juuka, North Karelia. The company’s raw material reserves and production capacity complement Nordkalk’s supply in the region and bring new opportunities for the development of both companies’ operations.

“Nordkalk is an excellent partner for us to support the growth and development of our company. Together, our goal is to further develop the recently started granulation operation in Paltamo and introduce new products to the market. In addition, we strive to find new opportunities for more efficient utilisation of Nordkalk’s limestone deposits in Eastern Finland,” says Hannu Repo, CEO of Juuan Dolomiittikalkki.

While Nordkalk owns majority of Juuan Dolomiittikalkki Oy’s shares, minority holding will remain with the current owners, i.e. Jukka and Hannu Repo. In addition to Paltamo and Juuka’s operations, the deal includes Juuan Dolomiittikalkki’s subsidiary Kuovila Limestone Oy, which is applying for a prospecting permit for Kuovila’s wollastonite and calcite deposit in Raasepori.

Juuan Dolomiittikalkki will continue operating under its own name and with the current personnel. The agreements of distributors, contractors and customers will continue as before.

“We believe that the benefits of the joint venture will become apparent quite soon when we develop the market together and enhance local lime production. The benefits will materialise in a wider product selection, more efficient distributor cooperation and a more efficient supply chain, and ultimately also in better harvests from the region”, state Anssi Koikkalainen and Hannu Repo.
