The blasting in our quarries take place at a certain stroke of the clock. For decades, people e.g. in Pargas have been able to check the time by the warning sound from the quarry. But sometimes, a blast is needed at a different time, or in a different area of the quarry making the blast sound different in the town. When something out of the ordinary happens, one may get anxious if one wasn’t aware of the change. An SMS from the quarry before a blasting can help.
Quarry information with a text
The latest improvement on our pursuit for effective and relevant communication with our local communities, is an SMS service provided by our quarry personnel in our biggest locations in Finland. Now, people in these communities can sign up for an SMS service for information about when a blasting in their neighbouring quarry will take place.
In autumn 2022, we introduced the new service in Lappeenranta and Pargas. The service has been welcomed by our neigbours and so far approximately 70 people have signed up.
“This is an easy-to-use and quick tool to inform our neighbours about the blastings in the quarry. It supports the other digital communication channels and builds trust between Nordkalk and local communities”, says communications specialist Tiina Roine from Nordkalk.
More information on Neighbour page
We have focused for years on building positive relationships with the local communities in various ways. In Finland, we have had a “Neighbour page” on our webpage in the largest locations. On this page we have been able to communicate e.g. about coming events such as open houses or neighbourhood evenings; changes to our routines such as a blasting at an unusual time of the day.
Thanks to the renewal of our webpage in 2022, we have been able to not only extend the use of the neighbour page to more Nordkalk locations but also share more information. We e.g. describe the multiple ways we measure the environmental impacts of our operations in the community and share local Nordkalk news.
By communicating with the neighbours, whether on the web page or via an SMS, Nordkalk can address the concerns of its neighbours and demonstrate its commitment to being a responsible member of the community.
