Unique Mountain Bike Trail Emerges on Nordkalk’s Land in Sala

An exciting project is currently underway on Nordkalk’s property at the Strå industrial area in Sala. A unique mountain bike trail is taking shape, aimed at promoting outdoor activities in the region and offering a special cycling experience for both beginners and experienced riders.

Funded by EU grants

The project is a successful collaboration between Nordkalk, regional authorities, and the local community. It demonstrates how opportunities for recreation in the region can be enhanced without using local tax funds.

Nordkalk’s Role in the Project

“A few years ago, we were asked if we could provide the land for this trail. The area was previously part of the factory grounds where Stråbruken started its lime industry in 1898. At the end of the 1990s, the area was left with some ‘waste stone piles’, which will now form the foundation for the trail,” tells Mattias Bäckström, MD Björka Minerals AB.

Nordkalk’s role in the project is primarily supportive, providing the land. The company has signed a five-year contract for the land, with the possibility of extension.

Local Engagement and Sustainability

“As many of our operations are located close to communities, various collaborations with local residents are very important. In our sustainability work, we commit to maintaining an active dialogue with the local community and engaging in projects that benefit the area, of which this is a prime example,” states Nordkalk’s EVP Carbonates Sweden Annica Lindfors.

The project aligns well with Nordkalk’s goals for community engagement and sustainability work. It provides an opportunity to use an old industrial area in an innovative and socially beneficial way, whilst also garnering positive local attention for the company.

With this unique mountain bike trail, Nordkalk looks forward to contributing to an exciting development in the Sala area. The project showcases how industry and outdoor recreation can work together to create added value for the local community.
